It has been almost a year since I wrote the Solar Parade Quilt pattern. Solar Parade was supposed to be the first pattern I released, so it feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders today now that is my third quilt pattern in my shop. I made my first Solar Parade quilt back in June 2020 and it is probably my favorite of the three I have made.

My first version of the Solar Parade Quilt was this baby size quilt using my scrap bin. I chose yellow, purple/pink, and blue fabrics and started making blocks one by one. This was my first time making half rectangle triangles and was completely intimidated by them, but by the end of this quilt I felt like a pro. (If you want to learn more about Half Rectangle Triangles I share my tips for making them two at a time in my HRT blog post.)

My next Solar Parade Quilt was this throw size Christmas version using the fat quarter bundle of Cozy and Joyful fabrics by Maureen Cracknell from Art Gallery Fabrics. The background is Beach from Riley Blake.

My final version of the Solar Parade Quilt was a throw size solid version using blues, yellows, and peach fabrics from my stash. The solid version is definitely faster to make than the fat quarter version, and using non-directional fabrics makes it even easier. I do love the difference between the two version. The solid version is more classic and refined looking, while the fat quarter version is more unpredictable and fun.

This pattern has five sizes: pillow, baby, throw, twin, and queen. My favorite part of this pattern are the half rectangle triangles. They are so satisfying to make. If you want a step by step guide to half rectangle triangles make sure to read my HRT blog post here.

My amazing pattern testers each made a throw size quilt and they are both stunning. Jess (@Jfeddema1) made this incredible fat quarter version using these gorgeous oranges, pinks, and peaches. I love how warm and soft this quilt looks.

Mary (@embercrafcompany) also made a beautiful fat quarter version using the Little Forester Fusion fabrics from Art Gallery Fabrics. She going to put on a bed at her cabin and it is perfection. I don’t know about you, but that looks like a bed I would want to snuggle up in.

This pattern is one of my favorite quilts to make. It has a little bit of everything so I never get bored during the piecing process. And the blocks look like happy dancing suns (hence the name Solar Parade.) I hope you enjoy making this quilt as much as I do.
