Inspired by poinsettias, I originally designed this to be a Christmas quilt. My original mockup of this quilt was solid red flowers with a charcoal background to make those poinsettias pop. I liked it, but I wasn’t in love with it. So I started working on other projects and decided to come back to this design later. When I did come back around to this pattern I started out by playing with more color options. I feel changing the flowers from solid colors to multicolor added more movement and dimension making the quilt feel less stiff.

Now, if you prefer the original version with the solid flowers you can still make that one by using 1/3 yard for each flower. All other fabric requirements are the same. But I prefer the look of the multicolored flowers. So that is the version I used to write the Mod Garden Pattern.

The first test quilt I made is the baby size. I used a bunch of solid purple and yellow fabrics I had in my stash. I quilted it using the andalusia pantograph and backed it in a lovely purple minky.

I then made my cover version of the Mod Garden quilt using V&Co Ombre solids from Moda Fabrics in Mulberry, Burgundy, Cranberry, Hot Pink, Magenta, Persimmon, Coral, Popsicle Pink, Honey, and Mustard. The background Fabric is Moda Bella Solids in white. I quilted it using the Paper Blooms pantograph by Julie Hirt. The backing is Art Gallery Fabrics Grid Framework Albarise which I have had sitting in my backing stash waiting to be used. For the binding I used Kona Cotton Solids in Pickle.

I see this pattern as being so versatile. You could make the flowers yellow with a black/grey center to make them sunflowers. Or you could use low volume fabrics for the petals and yellow centers for daisies. A scrappy version would be fun too. And I do still plan on making a poinsettia version of this quilt using a charcoal background and having multicolored red flowers. I wanted to make one more baby version of this quilt before the pattern release, but I ended up having a baby a week ago so I will have to make this quilt later. But here is a picture of my mock up for that quilt and my fabric pull. It is the Robert Kaufman Escargot for it Fat Quarters.

My incredible pattern testers made gorgeous versions of this quilt. They are all so fun and beautiful.
