The Reticle Quilt

The Reticle Quilt Pattern is now available!

I designed this quilt back in 2019 when my scrap bin was overflowing and I desperately wanted to empty it and not waste anything. Well, I have since learned that no matter how many scrappy quilts I make, my scrap bin will never empty. I swear those scraps reproduce when you’re not looking. Anyway, that was my intention with the Reticle Quilt.

The first version of the Reticle Quilt I made is a “solid version”. I made a baby size using teals and yellows and backing it in a super fluffy cuddle fabric. It is like snuggling a polar bear when bundled up in this quilt. Its amazing. It was after making this quilt that I was trying to come up with a name for this pattern. To me the “cross” portion of the block looks like the crosshairs (or reticle) of a rifle scope. My husband, being Mr. Hunter Extraordinaire, was (at the time I made this quilt) constantly talking about a new scope he wanted specifically for its reticle. That is when the lightbulb went off and I thought that “Reticle Quilt” is the perfect name.

I was shocked at how fast this quilt came together. So when I finished the solid version I immediately started making a “scrappy version” using the pattern as I intended it to be, scrap busting! This is when I thought that I should add a way to make the background of this quilt scrappy too. So I added the scrappy background fabric requirements as an option to the pattern. That way you could potentially make this quilt 100% OUT OF SCRAPS! What a dream. Once I have time I really want to make a 100% scrappy version.

The last version of the quilt I made is another “scrappy” version using Fat Quarters. I used the New Dawn fabric collection by Citrus and Mint Designs for Riley Blake. I fell in love with this collection and had this bundle sitting in my stash waiting to be used. I absolutely love how delicate and fresh this quilt looks. I used the bees in cream as the background fabric which I think adds such a sweet look compared to using a solid background. I just love those subtle teal bees. My daughter loves them too, so she claimed this quilt as her own before I had even finished assembling the blocks.

My daughter got to select the quilting design for this quilt. She chose Monarch Butterfly. I honestly tried to talk her out of using this design at first, but stubborn four year old girls are often unwavering. So butterflies it was, and I am actually really happy with how it turned out. Plus my daughter is thrilled to have this quilt on her bed. I mean does anything warm a Momma’s heart more than seeing their babies snuggle the quilts they make for them? It gives melts my heart.

Here are some closeups of my favorite blocks from this “scrappy” looking quilt. Those strawberries are my absolute favorite fabrics in this collection.

This pattern has instructions for four quilt sizes: baby (50”x50”), throw (66”x82”), full/queen (82”x100”), and king (100”x100”). This pattern is for a confident beginner. There is a bit of seam matching so basic quilting knowledge, consistent 1/4” seams, and a quilt or two of experience will be helpful. Here are the fabric requirements for all the sizes of The Reticle Quilt:

Beth (@modernlystitched) made this darling baby size Reticle Quilt. She called this her “modified scrappy version” by keeping the colors consistent but the prints different for fabrics A-E for each block. I LOVE IT!
